Billibed

Being a baby is hard work. Being a baby who has to sit in a Billibed for 18 hours a day is even harder. Poor Jillian is a little jaundiced and is currently spending any time she's not eating lying over a blue light in order to help her out. She's also eating a lot (which means extra pumping for me) because the way to get rid of jaundice is to poop. She's being a real trooper though, she's had to get her heal pricked twice in the last two days and then spends most of the day lying in the blue light and is hardly fussing at all. The only real problem is since she needs to be eating so much we've had to supplement with formula so she's lost all interest in breastfeeding. If anyone knows anything about this and has some good advice, pass it along! I caught her and her daddy sleeping side by side. It's tough work to be a dad too, I guess (he's the one that got to sleep last night...).

My cousin had to deal with stuff like this (with the breastfeeding stuff) before... she had lots of good suggestions - like taping a tube to your breast so that the baby still thinks that's where the food is comming from, or things like that... I don't remember all of it, but I could probably ask her for you, if you would like.

My kids both had slight jaundice too, I hope she's doing better soon!!!

p.s. - can you email me your current address?

I like to follow blogs, not stocking, but I find it interesting to hear different opinions and ideas. I found your blog through mommymelb. I've been reading 'The Baby Book' by William Sears and Martha Sears. In this book it says that introducing the bottle, or pacifiers too soon may cause "nipple confusion". Then the baby might prefer the bottle and reject nursing. What Sam was talking about is called a syringe or a finger-feeding system for supplementing, although this book says to avoid the bottle stage unless medically necessary. Just a suggestion, call a lactation consultant. Anyway,I strongly recommend this book. Amazon sells it inexpensively and it talks about everything from infant feeding and nutrition to parenting to toilet training. I am not an expert, because I have only been a mother for 11 weeks, but I feel as mothers it is important for us to be informed to make informed decisions for our babies. Anyway, good luck to you and enjoy your baby! She is beautiful!

P.S. Don't give up on breastfeeding, if that is what you want to do for your baby.

I agree with Lanae. If it's something you want to do there are ways to do it. I've had several things of mastitis this year, and my Dr. suggested giving it up, but that's not what I want to do, so I just have to work a little harder at it! I think calling a lactation consultant might be a good idea. I think the hospitals have one.

Anyway, I hope that she gets "unjaundiced" quick. Her pictures are so cute!

(And remember it does get easier, and you will sleep again, I promise!)

Mom may have mentioned getting a hold of LLL in your area. I don't know, but I e-mailed one gal and she was really helpful when I was trying to change how I was feeding Tanner. They seem to be more helpful than the pediatrician, at least that is my experience. How has it been coming? I know it can be frustrating sometimes, but it is worth it. I love the picture of Sean and Jillian. It looks like something I would catch Stephen doing. :)

Things have been going much better with the breastfeeding. I've been pretty persistant and doing lots of pumping and can get her to breastfeed about half the time. Although, now it seems she'll only take one of my breasts...so we've got a bit of work ahead. She might be a stubborn thing but so am I! Thanks for the advise:)

Both of my kids favored one breast over another. I tried a shield with Dallin and it might have helped. I do think a lactation consultant is more helpful than a pediatrician also. They've been in the trenches themselves and have a real strong philosophy of breastfeeding. The bili blanket is cool. When I was in Preston they were trying to use a brand named Wallaby which just wrapped around the baby's tummy. This looks like it would be better because it covers more of the body. Both of my kids had a little jaundice too but luckily they were born in May and June and I just sunbathed them. Actually my doctor says for some reason the breast milk doesn't help the bili go down like formula does. He says it is something he is going to take up with the powers that be when he gets a chance. Anyway good luck with it all. Babies are a new thing and you have a whole new learning curve.
